Book Description

In this new edition of her classic book on human relationships author Florence Littauer draws from the experiences of the apostle Paul and her own demanding encounters to offer readers encouragement and practical advice to help smooth out thorny relationships.

Readers will learn the secret to dealing with the four personality types:

  • The Sanguine who wants attention and credit
  • The Melancholy who longs for order and discipline
  • The Choleric who appreciates action and obedience
  • The Phlegmatic who loves peace and quiet

Readers will learn how to help friends and family see themselves as others see them, and they’ll learn how to react to trying situations by becoming more aware of how they affect those around them.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Disappointed   Feb 6, 2007
This book appears fun and offers basic advice but lacks depth; also has a quite simplistic approach to personality types, doesn't discuss when the probability of mental illness could be at play and therefore misses out on empathic communication and a whole avenue upon how one can obtain help for others. It also doesn't take into account how one's environment can influence behaviors and that milieu has to be considered in any dysfunctional system.

Regarding her treatment of "Debbie Depressed" --this is a simplistic and potentially damaging analysis of a very serious disease and one gets the impression there is a certain amount of denial and victim blaming here. Yes there are people who do attempt to gain attention for there problems but using the word "depressed" vilifies a whole category of individuals who are afraid to get treatment or confide about their treatment for the very fear of being labeled as the author does here...Depression should not be described as a character trait - it is a treatable illness with significant morbidity and mortality, one would think that especially in a religious setting every attempt would be made to get help for the afflicted and not simply categorize them as "difficult".

Practical advice will prove invaluable to any reader who isn't a hermit.  Feb 3, 2007
Written by internationally known speaker and author Florence Littauer, How To Get Along With Difficult People is a straightforward catalogue of difficult personality types one is likely to encounter at church, at college, at the office, or in any other walk of life, and advice for getting along with each of them. The witty takes on hard-to-deal-with personality traits, humanized through alliterative names such as Gertrude Grudge, Bob Bossy, and Larry Lazy. Though How To Get Along With Difficult People frequently discusses irritation-inducing personalities in the context of a church group, its practical advice will prove invaluable to any reader who isn't a hermit. Highly recommended.

Help for getting along with those difficult people  Dec 20, 2006
The world is full of difficult people. Of course I'm not one of them, but I know several who are. Florence Littauer asks people who take her class to list all the things they don't like about other people. (I could fill a book.) Then she starts to meddle and asks them to list their own faults. (Like we have any.)
The list of don't likes is crowded with things like complainer, gossiper, liars, bigots, and on and on and on. The list of their individual faults includes things like overeating, preoccupied, poor willpower, etc. Not a difficult person in the bunch.
The truth is we all have our moments when difficult is the right word to describe us. Littauer profiles people like Sally Spiritual, Marvin Music, Sam Sermon, Joyce Judging, Bob Bossy, Debbie Depressed, Gloria Gossip, and others. I recognized myself a few times. She does a good job of pointing out those weaknesses we see in others and ignore in ourselves.
There is even a Parade of Pious Personalities Skit at the end of the book. I enjoyed this one.

Trite and ignorant-Christian ignorance of the worst possible kind  Jun 16, 2006
This book only contains a few personality types and references everything on how you would deal with people at Church!
It is trite and ignorant enough to make me wonder how this person can possibly view themselves as an authority, or how this book got published. My guess is its her 6th or 7th book and they gave it to her cause she sells books. This is most likely her first venture on this particular subject. Her views of depression and depressed people are particularly offensive.

Great book  Jun 10, 2006
This book is great for understanding others. It helps us to realize that everyone is difficult at some point, including ourselves. The key is finding out one's strengths and weaknesses to see what part they play in your life and what part you can play in theirs. This book also helps to understand ones self.
