 | Great Bible Study Book Mar 2, 2010 |
| This book is not just a great read, (I've read some of it too!), it is providing great jump-offs for stimulating discussion at my husband's Bible study. He says it is inspirational and challenging. | | | | A manly man's guidebook to Christian leadership Jan 11, 2010 |
Although this book was written for men I found it extremely informative and interesting. The author, a man who has a ministry for men takes everyday occurrances and shows how they are a part of God's plans even if we can't see it at the time. This book is about having faith in God. God uses many different stages to hone us into servants that are capable of standing strong in the face of difficulties. Although we may go through the desert of monotony, disappointment, and down right boredom, it is our faith that God will use us and our study of the Word that in the end makes us ready for the trials of leadership ahead. God can not use someone who is too anxious to be the leader and is not capable of standing in the face of problems, he uses the leader who can face anything and carry on. The men of the bible that Mr Farrar focuses on are Caleb and Joshua, two men of great leadership and strength who spent 40 years wandering in the desert before being allowed to enter the Promised Land. This is the second book in the Bold Men series and is definitely a must read for anyone interested in a look behind the scenes of a "successful" Christian leader.

Being a Christian woman has its challenges and I cannot imagine the challenges Christian men have to face every day. Christian men must be strong leaders for their families and books like Battle Ready can be useful resources to turn to.
This book focuses on two men of the Bible who were strong men for God, Joshua and Caleb. Battle Ready goes beyond just being a Bible study. It is a very honest, personal, and straightforward book that goes deep into the Word to help men be strong for God. There is a very good section about bitterness in the Increased Hardship chapter that is very surprising and interesting. There is a lot of very interesting and useful information and Godly advice in the pages of this book.
I learned a lot from this book and I know that men will be able to get a lot out of this very practical and very well written book. I highly recommend Battle Ready for all Christian men. The Christian life is not an easy one and men need to be prepared for the battles that are coming. I know my husband is looking forward to getting his hands on this book.
| | | | A very disappointing book Nov 12, 2009 |
A Christian men's group I am in decided to read and discuss this book. I have read about half of it and am very disappointed. It is one of the worst Christian books I have ever read (and I have read hundreds of Christian books) and am a seminary graduate. The author seems to have great difficulty sustaining a thought or making an argument. He jumps around from one half-baked point to another slapping together a loose patchwork of Bible verses. The most frustrating feature of the book is that the author makes sweeping assertions for which he provides no evidence. For instance on page 15 he refers to "a raging current of anti-Christian bias flowing through our courts, universities, and media" yet he gives no evidence to support this sweeping statement. In reference to "the recent economic bailout", Mr. Farrar states "It was all done out of panic and fear." He offers no evidence for this statement. On page 23 he asserts that "it is safe to say"..."the United States will suffer some kind of major calamity or colapse..." "Or maybe we will just die a slow death as a result of suffocating socialism." Apparently he doesn't like socialism, but he does not bother to define it or discuss why it is not a good economic policy. Later he sets up a straw man in his brief, sweeping comments on global warming. He asserts that global warming will not destroy this planet and he quotes Genesis 8:21-22 as his proof text. Later he refers to "radical environmentalists". He does not offer any analysis of the threat of global warming such as whether it is a real threat to the quality of life on earth or what the causes may be or what, if anything the Bible teaches us about our responsibility of stewards of the earth to which God has entrusted us. Such a discussion would have been helpful. This book is a sloppy patchwork of theological truisms (God is in control. We shouldn't worry about our lives.) along with outlandish statements indicating the author's very conservative outlook on political, social, and economic issues, for which he offers insufficient support or evidence. If you want to learn about Joshua and Caleb, read about them in the Bible. If you want to learn something about being used by God, read the Gospels. Don't waste your time or money on this shallow book. | | | | If you need encouragement during these tough times, read Battle Ready! Sep 14, 2009 |
In the midst of economic melt-down, stress and turmoil, author Steve Farrar offers biblical advice and first hand examples of how to hang tough in the hard times. In Battle Ready: Prepare to Be Used by God, Farrar advances the theme that God must first train and prepare the man He would use.
"If a man asks God to use him, he's asking for a good thing," says Farrar. "But how God chooses to answer that prayer and the way He purposes to prepare him for such a life may bear little resemblance to how he imagined it would work!"
Though they may not know it, those who want to serve God will undoubtedly face unexpected hardships, seasons of frustration and seeming futility, and find themselves painted into what seem like impossible corners. And then there are the giants, those brutal, lumbering monstrosities that crash into our lives--unexpected and uninvited--and show every intention of taking up residence.
These giants don't have six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot. Instead, they take on the ugly face of disease, disappointment, depression, addiction, financial reversal, career setback, family breakdown, and personal failure.
"The diverse giants we fight can threaten our peace, well-being and very existence. And the man who desires to be used by God will face not just one giant in his life, but many," writes Farrar. "That's the nature of the Christian life. It's from faith to faith or, to put it another way, from giant to giant."
In Battle Ready, Farrar teaches men the importance of training and preparing for combat with these giants by examining the real life biographies of men who made an impact in their world, Bible warriors Caleb and Joshua. While exploring the lives of Joshua, who led the Israelites into the Promised Land, and Caleb, who trusted God, and not himself, for victory in battle, Farrar offers perspective, strong counsel, and hope for every man who longs to serve God.
The follow-up to God Built, the first in the Bold Man of God series, Battle Ready will prepare men of all ages, at every stage of their spiritual walk, to become men God can use--men who are battle ready!
This book will boost your faith and encourage you to keep trusting in God, no matter what comes your way.
